The name Κρυοπηγή translates to “cold spring,” a nod to the natural freshwater springs. There remains a 1937‑built central fountain fed by frigid natural water. Until 1955 the village was known as Pazarakia (“little markets”), when it was renamed to Kriopigi. The village itself is perched amphitheatrically on a hill, providing panoramic views of the Toroneos Gulf. Whitewashed houses with terracotta rooftops, narrow cobbled streets, and blooming bougainvillea create the quintessential Greek village aesthetic, yet without the overwhelming tourism of better-known locales.
Kriopigi is surrounded by good beach bars operated on beautiful and tranquil beaches in Halkidiki. Early risers are rewarded with breathtaking sunrises, and by midday, the pine trees lining the beach offer natural shade—a rarity in Mediterranean coastal spots.

While the beaches seduce with their beauty, it’s the food that roots you in the region. Kriopigi is proud of its Macedonian culinary heritage. Village tavernas serve hearty dishes like moussaka, soutzoukakia (spiced meatballs in tomato sauce), and fresh horiatiki salads bursting with flavor. Don’t miss trying tsipouro, a local distilled spirit, often shared among friends at the end of a meal.
The weekly farmers’ market is also worth exploring, with seasonal fruits, olives, herbs, and handmade cheeses—an insight into the region’s agricultural traditions.
